Let's Talk About Blogging: Profile Part I

I promise that I am not going to blog about this everyday, but this was part of the original post, but it got too long, so I had to split it in two.

Let's talk about your Blogger Profile. No matter where you blog, your Blogger Profile can be a great way for people to find you and your blog. If you really don't want people to ready your blog, keep reading, because we will talk about ways to HIDE your blog too!

We will start with the Privacy section (the first section you will see if you click EDIT PROFILE) Here is what I know:

1 - Share My Profile

If you do not have the box checked on Share my profile, people will receive a message from blogger when they click on your name that says your profile is not available. They will not see your profile that includes the link to your blog.

If you do have it checked, people will be able to see your profile. You will still be able to limit the amount of information people can see.

Do you have that box checked? Why or why not?

2 - Show My Real Name

If you have this box checked your first AND last name will appear in your profile.

I personally like people knowing my first name, but don't really want my last name floating out there. So I choose to leave this unmarked, but I use my first name as my Display name (in the Identity section)

3 - Show My Email Address

This one is a big one (and one of the MAIN reasons I wanted to talk about blogging)

If you have the box checked, there will be a link on your profile that says Email. People can click it to send you an email.

Also, if you leave a comment on someones blog they will be able to reply to you directly from your comment. This is one of my favorite features! Especially when someone asks me a question in the comment section. I can just reply to them through email and I know they will get the answer.

If you have the box checked and you do not share your profile, bloggers will still be able to reply to your comments via email messages.

If you do not have the box checked the Email link will not appear under Contact in your profile. If you leave a comment on a blog and they want to reply, it will show the email address: noreply@blogger.com

Make sure to look to the right of the box. You will see the email address that will be visible in your profile and when you leave comments. You do not have to use your main email address and you do not have to use the email address that you use to login to Blogger.

I have an email account that I set up just for contact from my blog. You enter that email address in the Identity section of your EDIT PROFILE page. (It is the section directly under the Privacy section we are talking about here).

4 - Select Blogs To Display

If you click on the link it will take you to a list of all of your blogs associated with your profile. You may only have one. Or you may have 11. (Yes, I have 11. Don't ask. Or you can ask if you want to!)

Select which blogs you want people to see on your profile. If you have a private blog, you can hide it so that people don't try to access it just to receive the message that they are not invited. You can do the same thing for any test blogs you have.

If you hide a blog from displaying on your Profile, you can still see the blog on your Dashboard.

So most of that may have been really basic. Did I miss anything?

Do you have an email address on you profile? Why or why not? Can I bribe you to add one?

Is your profile private? Is your blog private? Does that keep you from commenting on blogs?

I could ask like a million questions! But I will stop now and leave it at half a million!

But if you do not have an email account on your profile I would love to hear why! Start talking ladies!

I love that you are doing this.
I added my email.
Thank you for the great advice...I am looking forward to more!

I didn't know about the blog one. Sometimes, people have 10 blogs listed on their profile, and it's hard to figure out which one is their real blog.

Thank you so much for the info. I checked my profile to make sure everything was right. And now I know how to email those who leaves comment on my blog.

So tell me what you really think about profiles.....lol

I have an email link and rarely do I receive direct emails. Of course I think many are a little cautious about little ol' blog stalker anyways!

Have a great day!

I share my profile, but I don't have my email listed...because I wasn't sure about the whole privacy thing. But, I think I might do like you and set up an email especially for blog contacts. Then I wouldn't have to leave me email in the comment section when needed. And, since we're talking about blogging...what do you think about the whole privacy issue? Do you think it's not a good idea to use real names on my blog...or do you think I'm putting my baby's life in danger by writing her real name and posting a million pictures of her all the time? I don't want to go private, because I like to "meet" new people, and I love comments from my blogger friends.

If you want some extra info about how to protect your photos, stop right-clicking, and get a little copyright protection, let me know! I can give ya some basic information! :)

Thanks for the info!

Krissa! I am so glad you added an email address!!

And Kristina, I have had the same issue. You find blogs they aren't using or ones that are private. I honestly have 11. But only the one I update all the time shows. The others are private or a work in progress or need to be revamped!

Krystal,

I will probably blog about this, but I think it depends a lot about what you do, where you live and what you are comfortable with.

It is the internet and you really don't know who is out there, but honestly you don't know who is living next door to you either!

I feel like you should be educated and do what you feel comfortable with. It is a lot more likely that your child would be abducted at the park then from someone who is stalking you online!

Blog Stalker,

Now you know I am going to send you an email!

Kim, I would love to know what you know about the whole right click thing. I personally am not a fan because obviously most of the stuff that I put on my blog comes from the magical right click.

I think there are times for it (if you are a photographer for one) but even with the right click disabled all you have to do is do a screen shot and you still have the picture. So sometimes I think disabling right clicking gives people a false sense of security. No matter what you do it is still the world wide web!

Great tips! I would love to get some more information about the whole right-clicking thing!

Thanks for the great info!!
I actually have an extra e-mail address just for blogging. I don't know that it makes sense privacy wise, but it works for me. I would love to hear what other bloggers think about using their kids' names and pictures on their blog. I am probably a little too cautious, but there are some sickos out there.

I was just going through my comments. On the first Lets Talk About Blogging post there are 45 comments. 30 of them have no email address attached to their profile. Hopefully they read this post too!

Great tips! I have a separate email account just for blogging--partly for privacy because my last name is in my email address, and partly because I just like have things separate.

I can already tell I am going to love this series. Keep it up!

(And yes, I have an e-mail.)

I think I am going to enjoy this topic. I have everything checked but my full name.

We are all on the same page around here! I did a post this morning asking for a Fairy Blogmother to help me sort out all the bloggy rules and technical stuff!

I just sort of bleed it all out on my profile! lol!

Thanks! It's so hard to reply to people when they do not show their email, their profile or neither. It takes too much time to try and track them down!
